The Nest Hub has held the crown as CNET's best smart display for a while, and it won't relinquish the title any easier with the updated second-generation Nest Hub. Google Assistant control used to be quite basic but that has recently been updated. Now, you can set up a Sonos speaker as the default sound device for any Google Home speaker. Note that you can’t do this when you first set up the speaker ; instead, you have to go back into the Google Home app, edit the Google Home speaker that you want and select the default speaker from there. While you could always place the Home in a room, only recently does the smart speaker understand this.

The best speaker for whole-house music
Keep in mind that with Google Assistant speakers there are some music apps that only work if you Chromecast them—which means streaming them over Wi-Fi from your phone to the speakers. You could also simply pair your phone with a speaker as you would a non-smart Bluetooth speaker. However, having to use your phone to control the music defeats the purpose of owning a voice-controlled speaker in the first place. Besides, you can get a much better-sounding Bluetooth speaker for that price.

Google Assistant and Alexa face off on their respective midsized smart displays. Google now has its hands-free voice calling feature available in the UK. With this, you can make high-quality calls for free to local mobile phones and landlines. This could be a great thing for anyone with a mobile plan that doesn’t come with many voice minutes. And, if you set your caller ID in the Home app, calls go out as though you made them on your own mobile phone. Both devices let you create groups for streaming to multiple devices, which gives you multi-room audio, too.
Amazon Echo Show 8
This allows you to set up your smart home easily and efficiently, without having to purchase an extra hub for more control and functionality. Smart speakers streamline the way you control smart-home devices, letting you use voice commands instead of fiddling with an app. It is compatible with Apple's Siri voice assistant, allowing you to use voice commands to control the device from other Apple HomeKit-compatible devices. Alexa and Google Assistant are two of the leading voice assistants out there. Here's how the smart speakers that use them stack up against each other.

Recently Google launched a follow up to its smallest smart speaker; the Google Nest Mini comes with three speakers (that's one more than the original), and is made from recycled materials. Like the Echo Dot, the speaker is puck shaped, if a little more pebble-like with softer edges, and has a top side covered in a fabric speaker mesh. You can pick up the Google Home Mini in a range of colors, with four flashing LED lights illustrating when it's listening to your commands and showing the volume level. Alexa can change colored lights to a specific choice with integrated hub, however it can’s pick from a color wheel, or select a particular lighting scheme, as you can in the Philips Hue app. With the Echo Plus, you can control these lights to turn ON/OFF at a specified time using Alexa voice controls.
Prices gone down
They have big screens for video chat, TV, or recipes, and great speakers, too. It costs $229 (£219, $349), similar to the original price of the 10-inchLenovo Smart Display. These smart displays are ideal for making Google Duo video calls to friends and family members. Pricing for smart displays is pretty straightforward, and matches the sizes of the devices. The Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15 are the most expensive models at $250 each, slightly pricier than the $230 Nest Hub Max, followed by the Echo Show 8 at $130, then the sub-$100 Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub.

Alexa's Drop In feature only works with other Alexa-enabled devices. With Google Assistant, your Google Home can control your Philips Hue lightbulbs, Honeywell thermostat, Nest security camera, and smart TV (as long as it's compatible). Also purchasing the Echo Plus will save spending extra $100 for a smart hub bridge. As the updates keep coming I expect NEW Echo Plus to be more and more powerful, with additional functions and Alexa skills, but as on now its basic as smart-home hubs go.
Google Nest Mini (2nd Generation)
Besides simply streaming videos from those services, both smart displays can show useful information like weather reports and sports scores, step-by-step recipes, and other handy graphical and video content.. Echo models take sound quality to another level with Dolby speaker technology, but is there any difference in the audio hardware inside these two models? Again, there used to be — but now the two are identical in this area, too.

It is developed by Qualcomm, and supports 16-bit audio at a bit rate of 384kbps. Wi-Fi 6, released in 2019, is based on the IEEE 802.11ax wireless LAN standard. Designed to operate in all frequency bands between 1 and 6 GHz, it offers higher data rates and lower latency compared to previous Wi-Fi technologies. Devices with stereo speakers deliver sound from independent channels on both left and right sides, creating a richer sound and a better experience. Keep in mind that, with both Alexa and Google Assistant, third-party speaker manufacturers are increasingly choosing to integrate the voice helpers into their own products.
By contrast, Google Assistant has the distinct advantage of, well, Google. As such, Assistant doesn’t just have a wealth of information – it’s built right into Google’s overall architecture. Tell Google Home your shopping list and Assistant will be able to reproduce that in your Pixel phone later. And, by using a two-word wake-up phrase, Google Home goes off less often by accident. Both units have microphones with far-field technology, which promises to pick up your voice from across the room or down the hallway. When it comes to answering life’s questions, big or small, Google’s main advantage over Alexa is, well, Google.
For example, its integration with the Nest Learning Thermostat lets you say “Hey Google, make it warmer” to raise the temperature. With Alexa, you need to say “Alexa, turn living room Nest to XX degrees,” and if you vary your language it simply won’t work. Both platforms let you deploy Routines so you can, for example, use one command to turn off all the lights and lower the thermostat. Check out our guide to the best smart devices for Google Home for more information. The original Home is the main product, which competes against the Echo in terms features and price (£89). Then, there’s theGoogle Nest Mini (£50), which competes with the Echo Dot and is cheap enough to spread throughout your home.
Among the smart displays that do include a webcam, some lack a physical shutter to cover the camera. The Echo Show 8, however, has both, which does mitigate privacy concerns somewhat. The upside, of course, is that you can video chat with the Echo Show 8, which you can't do on the Nest Hub. This gives a similar level of smart device control as with the Alexa app, letting you toggle lights or control a smart thermostat.
The Echo Show 8 also has a full web browser built in, with access to the open web, so if an app or service you want to use isn't available as a native app, you can often access it using the browser. The Nest Hub still doesn't offer a standalone browser, although there are some wonky workarounds. The Echo Show 8 sits between the two extremes, with an 8-inch screen that has the same 1,280-by-800 resolution as the Echo Show and Nest Hub Max, for the sharpest picture. The Echo Plus’s built-in Zigbee compatibility and temperature sensor are the standout differences between the Echo and the Echo Plus. This feature factors into the price difference, though, with the standard Echo costing about $50 less than the Plus model.
